When It’s Not For You

Posted by Anak ng Tinapa

When you have something to fight for, something that you can provide to someone you know personally, someone who needed the money, would you give your all?

The Reward Challenge last night was just that. It afforded the winner 250 thousand pesos to be immediately given to a person of their choosing. Some chose long-serving yayas for the years of care they have given. Some chose relatives. All of them clearly needed the money.

And then there was Betong’s choice: his high school classmate who was stricken with colon cancer. As we saw on the video, the cancer had already spread to the rest of his body, and he is no longer capable of sitting up. The prize money could be used to pay for the chemo therapy. Everyone was tearing up when they saw how badly each of the potential recipients’ need for that extra help. But when Betong’s choice (saved for last) was shown, the waterworks commenced among the remaining castaways (and I suspect, even the viewers).

Being an emotionally driven challenge as this is, everyone’s adrenalin is running high. But this is a very physical competition, requiring them to roll 6 big wooden boxes and arranging them in the correct pattern on giant steps. Again, having an athlete’s body proved to be a heavy advantage for Arnold as he easily finished the task well ahead of the others. This is not to say that the others didn’t try. We saw all of them put in their efforts. Mara & Stef, clearly touched by Betong’s choice kept on cheering him on while rolling their own boxes. But unfortunately for those rooting for Albert to win, he can only go so far.

When Arnold finally hoisted his flag, he broke down in tears. The girls came to console him. Arnold didn’t have much cause to jump up and cheer. He was happy that he was able to give her Aunt the money for medical treatment, but he was also aware that in doing so, he prevented Betong from helping his friend. In all the challenges, Betong was ok with not winning, save for this one. This was the one he wanted to win, not for himself, but for a dying friend.
Now, there’s another battle raging among the viewers regarding Arnold’s win. Stef was of the opinion that Arnold should have thrown the game for Betong’s sake. But if he did that, then what of his own Aunt, who needed treatment? Its part of the rules that prize money won are not permitted to be shared.

Before I wrote this review, I saw from a screen-cap tweet of Betong’s that his friend passed away by the time they got back from Palawan. May he rest in peace and free from pain.

Now the question I pose to those who would read this article is: If you were in the competition, would you purposely loose to let Betong win, knowing that in doing so, you deprive someone you love the money that they need as well?

for me, maybe not. the reward challenge is a fair game for everyone. i will do my best to win esp more so bec it will benefit someone else. that is the intent of the game rules. the producers of the show, if they have a sense of social responsibility, they would have done something for betong's friend off-cam and ahead of betong's efforts in the survivor game. just my opinion.

kc kung itatapon ang laro para manalo c betong, sana after na nagcompare-han ng backstory,in-award n lng k betong and then everybody went home feeling good abt d act. kaso di ganun ung rule. part of being selfless (ie not selfish) is accepting d fact na something that you want so badly ay para sa iba. and that's what betong showed. umiyak siya kc sobrang gusto niyang manalo pero di siya nagdamdam k arnie kc naintindihan niya na gusto din ni arnie na manalo for his loved one.

May saying tayo na ..Kung di ukol, hindi bubukol...the challenge is not for Betong to win but kudos to him for giving all his best para matulungan ang friend nya na madagdagan at least ang buhay nya. But Arnold as we all know being an athlete is always up to par sa lahat ng challenges be it immunity or reward. And this challenge is no different. The only sad thing on this challenge is, isa lang na beneficiary ang matutulungan ng 250K and swerte lang na tagumpay na nagawa yun Arnold for his Aunt. I read Arnie on his twitter did ask the production if he can share it to Betong but rules says you can’t.

c stef putak ng putak parang pato walang utang ng loob.....SANA MAN LANG MAHIYA KA SA SARILI MO BWESITTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!

January 20, 2012 12:52 PM

Arnie is a competitor. And the fact a love one needs it made him more pumped up to win it. Malay ba niya na life and death situation yung sa classmate ni Betong? I'm sure everybody would have just stepped aside and let betong win if they knew that was gonna be the case.

When you are in a position to help someone hindi ba madalas doon sa malapit sa iyo ang uunahin mo?

i think this needs repeating: betong is a good sport. tama ang pananaw niya kht parang emotionally nagbreakdown siya. long days on the survivor island only magnified his feelings, i guess.

Galit sya kay Arnold kasi malakas, but arnold has always been honest with what he feels. We'll Stef you dont deserve to win Survivor Philippines, hindi magandang ehemplo. May pagmamahal ka sa pamilya okay. But you're such a loser.

Nobody's life is worth more than anybody. Kung cancer ang batayan, everyone should have quit and gave chuckie the 3M. Hypocrites.

staying in the game is not about winning every challenges... look at maey and betong, always kulelat, ni isang challenge walang naipanalo, but they are still in the game, top 6, ha. john and gino - magagaling sa mga challenges piro ayun, chukchak. the game is also about surviving your opponents antagonism because comes TC, it matters a lot...

Survivor is not for the weak at heart. At times it can be vicious.

The challenges and rewards are designed to elicit emotions from both players and viewers. Unless it’s tribe-vs-tribe, you are not allowed to help another. You are not allowed to share rewards. Even if you win, it could be a disadvantage. Picture yourself eating a steak or cheeseburger after days of hunger. Then picture your fellow castaways being made to watch while they sip lukewarm water. It’s that cruel. And the fun part is you have to do that without hurting his/her feelings because you might get voted out.

The weak ones are usually weaned out early but come merge time, they usually outlast the other strong ones. And as a final kicker, even if you manage to manoeuvre yourself into making it to the finals, you will have to convince those same people you helped vote off to give you the grand prize.

RIP to Betong's friend. If I were Arnie, I would have done the same as he did. I won't let Betong win coz I have my Aunt to help, too. What would my Aunt feel if I let Betong win for his friend? If I were the Aunt, I would feel bad that my own nephew choose to help a competitor's friend instead of me. Besides, this is a game.

It is better to work for things we want or need. Everyone should play the game fairly and they did. Stef who's obviously anti-Arnie, thinks differently though. She looks at Arnie's being competitive as a negative trait,"di makatao" as she said. I hope she will be voted out next.

for me, no. the rules of survivor are very clear and fair. if i wanted to help betong, i would help him outside of survivor.

i hope stef gets voted out next. she is such an immature, negative (bleep) pretending to be nice and righteous! yes, arnold is so right to let her shut up!!!

Stef, sana makita mo rin yung positive side ng tao and not more on the negative side. Arnie is playing fair either manalo or matalo sya sa reward challenge!

From the time na napunta sila nila Mara sa Tala tribe and up to now..hindi na natapos ang kaka whine nya towards Arnold..ewan! Id rather watch other top 5 CA na natira while they were being interviewed..mas ok, di ka mapapra-ning.

as i see it, stef is just jealous of the marnie relationship..remember wen arnold gave her the ib to save her from tc,she must have thought arnie has suthing towards heer, but he ends up with a sweet relation with mara. yes, i think shes jealous, and who would not be, look at arnie- he is so HOT.

Stef sana you should remember to say the word Thank You to Arnie kasi kung di nya ibinigay yung bracelet nya sa inyo wala ka sa Apolaki tribe.
